Chapter 15
As the loud intro to “Achy Breaky Heart” pumped out of the speakers, Carter glanced over at me and let out a deep sigh. “I hate this song so much I want to murder it.”
Perhaps Dave was mining our conversations for material. Poor Carter had admitted on camera he couldn’t dance.
“Yes, Billy Ray Cyrus has launched several great gifts into our culture, hasn’t he?” Carter cracked a smile, but then it dropped back into a face of pure dread. I tried again. “This is like, the easiest line dance on the face of the earth. Trust me. All you have to do is walk up and down and clap when everyone else does.”
Tyson and Holly were already demonstrating the dance with flair while we waited for the instructor to finish getting a microphone pinned to her shirt. They grinned at each other as they moved in perfect unison. So Holly actually liked something. Maybe she was human after all.
“I thought Holly was mad we were line dancing.”
Carter looked over at Fred Astaire and Ginger and sighed. “She knows better than to take me dancing. She’s even called me a killjoy on several occasions. I think mostly she doesn’t like that you’re here.”
There was no way Holly heard us over the music, but she picked that exact moment to turn and sneer at me. If she was upset I was hanging out with her date, she could triple step her way over here and help him out. He looked like he was about to lose his breakfast.
The music stopped and the instructor clapped her hands and motioned for us to line up, before starting the track again.
“Everybody ready?” She didn’t wait for an answer. “And one, two, three, four, heel tap, heel tap, toe tap, toe tap, kick, rock back. Clap, shimmy, cross over, stomp, stomp, scuff forward.”
I momentarily forgot about Carter as I tried to keep up. This was not the dance I remembered. And there was no herd to follow, no one to hide behind and copy. I looked up to see Dave laughing at us, doubled over. Assistants next to him were covering their mouths and pointing at…I turned and took in Carter’s dancing. Oh, I so wanted to kick Dave where it counted. Carter’s arms were flopping like a marionette as he desperately tried to kick and stomp at the right times. Which was not happening. A sheen of sweat beaded on his forehead.
In his defense, he looked amazing in Wranglers and boots. But I wasn’t digging on the leather fringe hanging off his western shirt. It only drew more attention to the arm flopping. He turned and caught me staring.
“You don’t have to say it. I know what I look like,” he huffed out as we attempted our slide, turn, clap. “I’m reconsidering my first plan, which was to hide in the bathroom and refuse to come out.”
“Sorry. Holly’s already done that.”
“What?” Carter missed the cue to slide left and bumped into me. He put
